Four Form and Function was premiered by the American Trombone Quartet at the 2017 MTTEC Conference and the 2018 ITF in Iowa City. The piece employs four compositional forms while showcasing four functions of the trombone. The first movement showcases forte trombone playing in the form of a fanfare combining duple and triple. The second movement showcases the lyrical side of the trombone while employing intervallic structure of the major and minor second. The third movement is in the form of a fugue with the fugue subject showcasing the gliss, and the fourth movement is a gallop, showcasing the technical side of the instrument. The fourth movement also using retrograde as the first half of the piece are the motives played forward and, following a pivot chord, the second half of the movement are the same motives performed backwards and upside down. The piece concludes with a coda of material from the first movement returning.
