“Three Times Five” is a brass quintet in three movements. The movement names: Procession, Tranquility and Excursion, describe the mood in each case, without providing an actual or implied story. Throughout the piece, each instrument is featured in melody and ensemble roles, and the performance level is medium difficult. The horn is, perhaps, featured more than in some similar compositions. The first movement begins with a fanfare section before settling into the “procession” tempo. The second movement is calm and peaceful, as the movement title suggests. The final movement is more up-tempo with more moving notes and several meter changes. Three Times Five will be fun and interesting for players and listeners alike.
