Dreams, dances and destinations Dreams, dances and destinations is a piece written for euphonium, tuba and electronics commissioned by the wonderful Symbiosis Duo, formed by Gail Robertson and Stacy Baker, as part of the album of the same name. The work, structured in three movements and set in the dances of the time, proposes a reflection on our dreams and destiny through the Soliloquy of Segismundo from La vida es sueño (1635) by the Spanish author Pedro Calderón de la Barca (1600-1681), one of the most important theatre authors of the Golden Age of literature in Spain. The work begins with Living is only dreaming, a joyful dance in 2/4 binary time, with a medium-fast tempo and a single eight-bar theme that is repeated with variations interrupted by verses recited by the soloists. The second movement, Dreams and destiny, is a sarabande in which the euphonium and tuba show their expressive abilities. With a slow tempo and in 3/4 time signature, it presents within its binary form a melancholic melody charged with deep reflection, contrasted by a second intense and emotional theme. The piece ends with The dream of freedom, an energetic dance in 6/8 + 3/4 time signature and reiterative character, which later leads to a joyful jácara, a lively and jovial dance that closes the work showing the enormous virtuosity of the euphonium and tuba. Eduardo Nogueroles Eduardo Nogueroles (1972) combines interpretation with teaching, composition and conducting. He is Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at the Professional Conservatory of Music of Valencia, member of the Spanish Tuba Quartet, member of the Team Board of the Spanish Association of Tubas and Euphoniums AETYB and Eastman Performing Artist. He studied tuba, conducting, composition and contemporary music in the conservatories of Jávea, Valencia, Madrid (End of career Honor Award), Perpignan (Gold Medal of the Conservatory), Arizona State University and the Royal Schools of Music (Licentiate with Distinction), with professors such as Miguel Moreno, Mel Culbertson, Sam Pilafian, Harvey Phillips, Tomás Gilabert, Andrés Zarzo or Ferrer Ferrán. He was laureated at the International Tuba Competition in Albany (New York) and at the Xátiva Brass Competition (Valencia). Was part of the Students’ Orchestra of the Community of Madrid and the Young National Orchestra of Spain JONDE, and has collaborated with numerous orchestras such as those of Castilla y León, Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra, Orquesta Sinfónica de la Radio Televisión Española, Orquesta Sinfónica de Granada, Orquesta de les Arts, Orquesta Nacional de Cataluña, Orquesta Sinfónica de Bilbao, Sinfónica de Galicia, Sinfónica de Córdoba, Filarmonía de Santiago, Orquesta Sinfónica de Euskadi, Orquesta Ciudad de Málaga, Grup Instrumental de Valencia, Orquesta Sinfónica de Valencia, Orquesta del Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía, etc. He taught tuba and euphonium at the Professional Conservatory of Meliana, at the Professional School of Music of Viana do Castelo, at the Superior Conservatory of Music of Vigo, at the Professional Conservatory of Castellón and at the Superior School of Music and Performing Arts of Oporto ESMAE. Since 1996 he has been giving master classes all over the world and regularly performs as a soloist with piano, orchestra or band, participating in numerous premieres and recorded several pieces as a soloist, including Ferrer Ferrán’s El Gigante de Hierro. In 2000 he recorded his first album Escenas latinas, followed by Una mirada atrás en (2014) and Rock & Tuba (2021). He has been Director of the Music Bands of San Miguel de Oia, Vilafamés, Aldaia, Villar del Arzobispo and Alboraia, with which he has won several prizes in competitions and made various recordings such as Sensacions or Begin the beguine. He was Director of the International Tuba Festival of Vigo from 1997 to 2003, President of the Spanish Association of Tubas and Euphoniums AETYB from 2012 to 2020 and International Representative of the International Tuba and Euphonium Association ITEA between 2019 and 2023. He has been a member of the jury in numerous competitions, both performance and composition, among which stand out those of Juventudes Musicales de España, Falcone Composition Contest, Brazilian Euphonium and Tuba Association ETB, Spanish Association of Tubas and Euphoniums AETYB, International Tuba and Euphonium Association ITEA, etc. As a composer, his music is performed all over the world, having been recorded on several CDs, received various awards and commissioned by prestigious international ensembles and soloists. His pieces, published by the Diputación de Valencia, Rivera Editores, Opera Prima, Branfor, Pinnacle Brass and Potenza Music (USA), include works for soloists, chamber music, choir, band, orchestra and musical theater.
