Theia Koinonia utilizes two basic musical concepts, parallel triads and whole-tone collections (scales). Triads move up and down in whole steps to provide the chordal support for the melody. While the melody is based on the whole-tone scale that corresponds with the supporting chords, it moves freely in and out of the whole-tone collection to include “non-chord” tones. Harmonic shifts occur when changing from one whole-tone collection to the complementary whole-tone collection. The middle section of the piece contrasts with the first section by incorporating shifting meters and rhythms, followed by the closing section that recaps the opening section of the piece.
