James Grant says, Whiplash (marked 'Like trolls exercising') was commissioned by Jim Self for the 2013-14 USC Bass Tuba Quartet and was composed between Thanksgiving and Christmas of 2013. The music is dedicated with robust thanks to the four brilliantly-talented tubists for whom it was written, with a nod of deep respect and gratitude to Jim Self for his well-documented and unceasing commitment to expand the scope and content of offerings in the tuba and tuba ensemble repertoires.
