Composed for Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon, these "Hymnal Variations" use two famous hymn tunes as themes along with 12 variations, six on each hymn tune, in an arch like construction. The first tune, entitled Avon (Beneath the Sacred Throne) in the old hymnbooks, is stated at the beginning and is followed by six short variations. After a brief transition, the first of six variations on the theme Nettleton (Come Thou Fount) is heard. The piece concludes with a fortissimo statement of the Nettleton tune.
