Composer: Couvillon, Thomas
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Trombone
Genre: Contemporary

When I began writing the piece, I envisioned a work that would progress from a soft and highly chromatic opening section to a fast, bright ending. The idea of chromaticism led me to make use of the famous B-A-C-H motive (B-flat-A-C-B). This S-shaped musical gesture governs the entire piece and is gradually transformed through a process of intervallic expansion. The piece is composed in a spiral form, in which musical ideas return several times, but in a new context each time. This work was composed for the Elysian Trombone Consort.
