Jeremiah Clarke (1674-1707) was an English Baroque composer, who is best remembered for this popular keyboard piece. Commonly known as the "Trumpet Voluntary," but also called the "Prince of Denmark's March."
In the Baroque era, musicians and composers often wrote tributes to their employers who emphasized the greatness and wisdom of their powerful recipients.
The Danish prince was Prince Jørgen (1653-1708) son of the Danish king Frederick 3 (1609-1670) and Queen Sophie Amalie (1628-1685). Prince Jørgen married the English princess Anne 1683, and when she became queen in 1702 he was close to becoming king of England. But it never came to fruition, because at the English court he appeared almost like a comic figure: He was not good at speaking English and was most interested in wine and horses - ie. almost the opposite of what the tonal language of Trumpet voluntary expresses.
Trumpet Voluntary has proven to be one of the most popular pieces of music for weddings, official ceremonies and more.
