Opening with an exciting fanfare, Fanfare for Evan quickly moves to a 7/8 section where three trumpets set up an ostinato that serves as the foundation for a rhythmically-intricate duet. This gives way to an ensemble accompaniment of sound moving up and down under a piccolo solo. The work moves to a minor tonality and features optional flugelhorns before recapping the excitement from before with a blended variation of the ostinato, duet, and piccolo solo. Fanfare for Evan is composed for six trumpets with the principal part doubling on piccolo and optional flugelhorn doubles for the fifth and sixth parts.
