This arrangement is very special to Dwight, he wrote:
"The introduction is anything but simple. It is chaotic. There are hints of the main melody here and there and the tonalities change often in a short amount of time. I spent a whole day working on this section. It's important that the musicians play the intro with confidence. It transitions into full tonality by bringing in a few jazz chords before it yields to the main theme...
Next is pure " Simple Gifts", however, offered in a modern format. In the middle of the piece, a bold jazzy note is played that is totally out of character. It is quickly followed by a jazz lick that validates the bold note. The music then goes back to the theme as played earlier.
Lastly, there is even a comedic spot in the middle where I have the players verbally give a " Shush" to each other and to the audience. It suggests that enough noise has been made and that a return to peace and calm is required to finish the piece.
"Simple" is fun to listen to, and could be listed on a Traditional, Classical, or even a Popular music page on your website. Players will enjoy performing it.
