HENRY NICOLA MANCINI (1924 –1994)
- was an American composer, conductor and arranger, often cited as one of the greatest composers in the history of film, he won four Academy Awards, a Golden Globe, and twenty Grammy Awards, plus a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1995. His most famous music is the main theme in the PINK PANTHER films. This British-American series of comedy-mystery films featuring an inept French police detective, Inspector Jaques Clouseau, portrayed by British actor Peter Sellers.
The first film in the series was made 1963 and had an animated opening sequence, created by De-Patie-Freleng Enterprises, featuring the main theme by Mancini. This character, became subsequently the subject of his own series of animated cartoones. The character would be featured in the opening of nearly every film in the movie series. Elements and characters inspired by the films were adapted into comic books and merchandise.
