With the introduction of the “new” valve brass wind instruments during the 20th century, the number of civilian and military wind bands in both Europe, the United States and Russia exploded. There was no real standardization of combination of  instruments, and the size ranged from large giant wind orchestras to small brass ensembles.
Danish military musicians c.1910
The repertoire was mostly national anthems, marches and waltzes, but often also by arrangements of smaller pieces written by the greatest composers of the time. Copyright protection did not exist at that time, but the composers were really only happy with the advertising given, when their music was played by the wind bands.

ANTONIN DVORAK (1841 – 1904)

Antonin Dvorak was a master of such small pieces. The best known is probably his SLAVIC DANCE. The present LEGEND comes from a collection of several Legends op.59, first written for 4-handed piano and later instrumented for orchestra.
