Fantasia in F by W.A. Mozart (1756-1791) - arranged for Academic Brass Ensemble by Mogens Andresen.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his ORGELSTÜCK FÜR EINE UHR (Fantasia in F) K608 in 1791 for a mechanical musical clock (Flöten-uhr). This combination of a little organ with a clock in the front was placed in a waxworks owned by Count Josef Deym. It provided background music for a figure of the general: Field-Marshall Baron Ernst Gideon von Laudon.
GENERAL BARON ERNST GIDEON VON LAUDON(1717-1790)
Mozart was happy about his salary for writing the music but not so happy for the musical clock. In 1790 he wrote to his wife: “If it were for a large instrument and the music would sound like a real organ piece, then I might get some fun out of it. But the clockwork-organ consist solely of little pipes, which sound too high-pitched and childish for my taste.” In another letter to his father, he imagined the piece would be fine for a wind ensemble.
A MUSICAL CLOCK VIEWED FROM THE FRONT AND BACK
The piece has over the years been arranged many times for other instruments: For (real) organ, 4-handed piano, string quartet, string orchestra, symphony orchestra and more. In this version for brass ensemble, the music is shortened and transposed from F to C.
